About ACRE
Arizona Coati Rescue and Education (A.C.R.E.) is a non-profit 501c3 corporation dedicated to the rescue, preservation and education of the Coatimundi species.
The demand for exotic animals has increased tremendously for not only this species, but for many others. The desire to have an unusual pet has opened doors to licensed and unlicensed breeders to make profits by selling exotic animals including the Coatimundi young. They often remove their defenses (claws, K-9 teeth, etc) and sell them in pet stores, on the internet, underground trade and at auction. When these young are sold to homes to be raised as pets, the owner soon realizes that they are not a domestic animal like a cat or dog. They may have never been educated that it takes a huge commitment on the part of the owner to design their human habitat to accommodate the Coati. Because of this, these animals may be left in a carrier, given an improper diet, put in a cage that is too small or left out in the elements. Each one of our rescues has a horror story due to neglect, ignorance or abuse.
In many states it is illegal to own a Coatimundi and they are confiscated and sent to animal shelters such as the Humane Society. These shelters are not equipped to care for these animals.
A.C.R.E. was created as a safe haven for the Coatimundi. With over 25 years of experience raising and caring for Coati’s we know what it takes.
At A.C.R.E., we work with each of these animals independently, giving them the love and attention they deserve. They live in a large, safe enclosure that mimics their habitat in the wild.
It is our mission to preserve this species, to educate every individual that not all animals make good pets and not all people make good pet owners and to protect those that are abused or orphaned.
The Officers, JoAnne and Dany would like to thank you for visiting our site. We will continue to keep the site updated with new information and stories about all the great stuff we are doing to protect the Coatimundi. You can contact us via email at coati-acre@live.com.
